Alfonso Rincón took part in the Sport & EU 2026 Conference.

25 junio 2026

Alfonso Rincón García Loygorri took part in the Sport & EU 2026 Conference (Sport & EU), hosted by The Olympic Studies Research Centre for Safe Sport and Human Rights (OSRCSHR) in the Canterbury Christ Church University.

He participated in a panel entitled “Legal Challenges in Contemporary Sport Governance”, where he spoke about the interpretation of “Article 165 TFEU by the CJEU: Between Specificity and Compliance with Internal Market and Competition Law”.

He argued that the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) recognised some value in Article 165 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). According to the Court of Justice, the undeniable specific characteristics of sport may potentially be taken into account, along with other elements, provided they are relevant to the application of the TFEU provisions on free movement and competition.

The judgments in the ROGON and RRC cases, due to be delivered in July, will be relevant in assessing the approach followed by the Court of Justice in this regard.
